Habitat For Humanity Project To Feature Solid Concrete Walls
and Improved Energy Efficiency
58 homes to be constructed with Greenblock Insulated Concrete Forms
STUART, Fla. (November 29, 2006) – Greenblock® Worldwide Corporation (www.greenblock.com), a leader in the Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) industry and headquartered in Stuart, Fla., announced it has completed the exterior walls for the first house of the 58-unit Habitat for Humanity affordable-housing community located in Indiantown, Fla.
“This is a huge step,” said Marty Miller-Leveillee, director of Habitat for Humanity of Martin County. “Normally, we build five to nine houses per year, but this project calls for 34 of these houses to be done before June 2008. Using the Greenblock ICFs, we are able to construct more efficiently, saving time from our previous build methods and the houses will now be more energy efficient,” Miller-Leveillee said. “The energy-efficiency is a huge long-term benefit for the families in these homes.”
ICF construction is an improved technique to build the exterior walls of the house. The ICF forms are a ‘stay in place’ insulated wall forming system made of three primary components; high R-Value expanded polystyrene foam, rigid polymer connector ties which also serve as furring strips and steel-reinforced poured concrete. The use ofICFs began more than 50 years ago in Europe and continues to gain popularity in the construction industry.
“The Insulating Concrete Form Industry Association (ICFA - www.forms.org) has an ongoing relationship with the Habitat family throughout the United States, and since Greenblock is local to Martin County this project is a natural,” said Jeff Alexander, president and CEO of Greenblock. “Our installers at Insulated Concrete Walls (www.icwalls.com) had the walls up and ready for concrete on this first home in eight hours,” Alexander continued.
