-
Do I need to glue blocks down?
No, Greenblock does not need to be glued every row like some products. It is advised that you glue the top row of blocks to prevent wind or other elements from disturbing the wall prior to the pour, however, this is not always necessary.
-
Do the Greenblock ICF panels remain in place after they're filled with concrete?
Yes, the panels not only act as forms to hold the concrete in place, but they also serve as permanent insulation for your wall.
-
How do I put in my utilities?
We recommend using a hot knife or blade to channel grooves into the block once the concrete has had time to cure. These grooves are what you then place your utilities into. Electrical boxes are installed in the same manner.
-
Do I need waterproofing on the walls?
Yes. Greenblock recommends waterproofing below grade, but it depends on your local climate and building codes.
-
How do I install doors and windows?
Greenblock recommends building bucks from pressure treated wood or purchasing a pre-made reusable buck system like that offered from V-Buck. Once the concrete has cured we place our windows and doors in a standard fashion.
-
Can I build my own Greenblock house?
Greenblock can be utilized in DIY building projects. However, due to the complexities of building with concrete we require builders to have the proper training and experience prior to attempting to build with Greenblock. Our in-house installation company, Insulated Concrete Walls, is an experienced ICF sub contractor that will complete install the exterior walls of your home. Contact us for more details.
-
What size block does Greenblock offer and which should I use?
Greenblock offers 2 types of ICF block systems, Fixed-Web
and Panel(sometimes called knock-down or assemble-on-site).
Our Fixed Web blocks come in 2 core widths; 6 inch and 8 inch.
We have 2 Knockdown blocks; Gblox, which comes in 6,8 and 12 inch core widths, and our 2-4-2 block that has a 4 inch core width.
Generally all that is needed to satisfy code or engineering
requirements is 4 inch or 6 inch but as always your choice of block should
resort to the local building codes in you area.
-
There are so many choices, why should I use Greenblock over the others?
Greenblock incorporates numerous design qualities into their blocks, you should consider these three when looking at any block: A flat concrete wall system (stay away from waffle, screen grid, and post and beam). Subsurface webs (only use systems with webs spaced 6 inches apart or less and where the subsurface webs have furring strips that are at least 1.5 inches wide). A Lego type attachment system (stay away from tongue and groove). Greenblock offers you all these elements at an affordable price.
-
How is Greenblock priced?
Greenblock prices itself at a per wall sq/ft price which varies depending on your shipping location. Greenblock is priced competitively to CMU block and quality 2x6 wood construction.
-
What are the advantages of building with Greenblock?
People living in Greenblock homes have lower utility bills (up to 70%+), better heat distribution, lower outside noise infiltration (50+ STC), and less maintenance. In addition, there is less chance of mold growth (paired with a recommended air exchanger), reduced fire danger, and enhanced protection against extreme weather conditions.
-
Why should I use Greenblock over SIP panels?
Not only do Greenblock walls offer greater R-values, but they also provide greater security, less maintenance, and less noise infiltration. Also, SIP walls need to be ordered and produced in a factory, whereas the Greenblock product can be shipped to you within days and built with immediately. If you want strong, efficient, and cost effective construction, Greenblock is your building product.
-
Can I build more than just a basement?
Yes. The same features that make Greenblock great below grade also benefit you above grade. Greenblock recommends building both below grade and above grade in order to take advantage of the tremendous cost savings and high efficiencies of the system.
